Matt DeCarufelKeymasterHello LCs,
Great job last week with all that intensity. Finding the extra gas to push on day 2 is not easy, but by racing back to back days, you are now better prepared coming into our race season.
We are well into fall and the weather is unpredictable. So, when you are getting ready to come to training, be sure you have appropriate clothing for the conditions. For example, shorts and a t-shirt are not appropriate if it is 0 C and we are running in the shade on fresh snow.
The Canmore Nordic Ski Swap is coming up October 30. This is a good chance to pass on your old equipment and pick up some new gear. More details here http://www.canmorenordic.com/ski-swap/
It can be challenging to find good race skis, so when club members have them, we would love for them to stay within the club. As with past years, we will have a inter-club swap October 24 to 27 in the teamroom. Have a look at your equipment. If you have outgrown good race skis, poles, or boots, please think about passing them onto a smaller athlete in the club.
Pole Height… As some of you may have heard, FIS has created a new rule in hope to encourage more classic skiing and less double poling. The rule states that classic ski poles can not be greater than “83% of body height measured with boots, and for the length of the pole from the tip to where the strap enters the pole.” More details here: http://www.fis-ski.com/cross-country/news-multimedia/news/article=maximum-classic-technique-poles.html
Interestingly, this is very close to what we have been recommending for your classic pole length, but to stay current with the rule, we will now measure poles using % of height rather than the old formula. So:
Classic poles- 83% of height with boots from tip to strap.
Skate poles- 88.5% of height with boots from tip to strap.
But before you go out and buy new poles or cut them down, please chat with a coach to ensure everything is dialed in.Team training this week:
Tuesday(18) 4:30-6:00 Skate Roller Ski. Meet at the teamroom.
Wednesday(19) 4:30-6:30 Classic Roller Ski and Pole Measuring. Bring both Skate and Classic Poles. Meet at the Teamroom.
Thursday(20) 4:30-6:30 Strength and Ski Striding. Be sure to bring your ski striding poles.
Saturday(22) 10:00-1:00 Bow River Campground Sprint Race We are coordinating with Foothills Nordic to have a Skate Rollerski Sprint Race simulation just down the road by Three Sisters. We will start with a qualifier and go into kings court heats, so everyone will ski 3 heats. Bring a snack.
Conditions are good for a skate sprint race! see you at 10am.
Congratulations on reading this far! This was a long post… 😯
